Undergraduate computing and STEM departments have long suffered from issues related to broadening participation. However, there has been, to date, no large-scale effort that focuses on addressing issues of systemic racism and bias that directly impact not only students from minoritized groups, but also faculty (as issues of race, gender, and intersectionality impact hiring, promotion, and tenure decisions).
The Cultural Competence in Computing (3C) Fellows Program is a two-year, cohort-based, virtual professional development program that helps computing faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students: 1) learn more social science topics (e.g., identity, intersectionality, racism, bias, and discrimination) as well as how these topics manifest in academic environments and technologies; and 2) develop sustainable projects (courses, modules, and other activities) at their home institutions that leverage these topics, making direct connections between the biases in AI technologies and the biases in academic/professional environments, the historical contexts of both, and the long-term impacts on both technology creators and consumers.
Our growing community includes over 300 faculty, staff, and graduate students across five countries. More info on the 3C Fellows Program is available on the program website, including the FAQ, list of Fellows who’ve completed Cohorts 1-3, and courses, modules, and other activities created.
